Why Powerlifting Shoes Aren’t Enough

Power lifting may be made easier by certain gear that aide in your training such as powerlifting shoes or gloves. This is not to say however that these items will make your training easier or make you the better competitor, they just help ease some of the discomfort.

Why We Fall Into This Trap

Everyone has looked for the magic way to get something done, reach a goal, or finish some work, but many times, the end result isn’t quite what we expected or we end up having to struggle to reach that goal over and over again.

For example, those that rely on diet pills to help them lose weight tend to find that as soon as they finish losing weight and stop taking the pills, they gain the weight right back. This is because they didn’t teach themselves to keep their good habits in place. This is the same issue with powerlifting shoes.

There is no magic bullet that can make you a better power lifter (at least, not legally). And if there was a secret that you could use, chances are good that you would have found out about it and everyone would be doing it – making it ineffective as something that will make you better than someone else. Power lifting shoes can give you the initial confidence in your form, but in the end, they are only shoes that could be replaced by a number of other shoes.

What You Can Do

While you do need powerlifting shoes to support your ankles as you lift during squats and dead lifts, there are other ways to make your form better as well as stronger. To start, you want to work through the motions of your lifting without any weights first.

By training your body to complete the movements correctly, you will allow your muscles to build up muscle memory that will help when you do add weight to the overall training.

Even those that have been power lifting for a while can benefit from this advice. By taking the time to stop and watch your form without weights, you may find areas where you will be able to change your form and make the weight seem lighter than before. Powerlifting shoes can’t do that – only you can.

What Else You Can Do

Aside from watching your overall form, you will also want to look at other power lifters for guidance. While you don’t have to actually talk to these athletes, you will want to go to competitions to see how they are performing the lifts that you want to compete in. Take a video if you can and try their movements during your next workout. Don’t just look at their brand of powerlifting shoes for guidance.

The main thing you need to keep in mind when training for any sport is that it’s your body that will be doing the work in the end – not the shirt, the powerlifting shoes, or your gloves. That knowledge will allow you to focus on your training and not just how good your gear looks.
