What It Is
A power lifting suit is the garment that you traditionally see in powerlifting competitions. It looks a lot like an average wrestling uniform that you might see those competitors wear. It has a tank-top top portion with shorts connected at the bottom.

These power lifting suit designs are made from synthetic materials that help to compress the form of the power lifter as well as aid in movement. How can this suit do both? Most well-designed power lifting suits are created for the individual athlete, allowing for little stretch and movement in relation to the shape of the body.
However, the cut and the shape of the power lifting suit allow the legs and shoulders to move freely during the actual power lifting movements.
What Designs Are Available?
Because each of the different power lifting movements requires different concentration from different muscles, there is a power lifting suit for each kind of movement – squat and dead lift, especially.
At first glance, each kind of power lifting suit looks similar, but each allows for better movement from the beginning of the move to the final thrust. For example, the squat suit supports the quadriceps as well as the hamstrings as the competitor holds the weight in place. In the dead lift, the back needs to be supported as the weight is lifted quickly to the shoulders.
Are These Legal?
With all of the benefits of the power lifting suit, it may seem as though it’s not something that would be sanctioned by the power lifting associations because it would give some competitors an unfair advantage.
This is a good question to ask. While most power lifting suit designs have been approved by the regulating associations, it never hurts to check with the local competition judges to be sure that you will be wearing something that is approved.
Do I Need One?
The biggest question is whether or not you actually need the power lifting suit at all. It seems to give you a slight advantage, but is this really the case or is it just that you are more aware of your muscles and how they are moving when you wear the suit?
And does this even matter? When you’re looking for a psychological advantage, there’s no doubt that a power lifting suit can certainly help.
However, the only real way to gain an advantage over your competitors is not through a power lifting suit; it’s through the hours and hours of training that you’ve put in.
